Why Tim Burton Wants to Work with Johnny Depp

The corpse of the Bride’s filmmaker Tim Burton has said that he is prepared to work with Johnny Depp again despite the actor’s current controversy. Currently promoting his Addams Family-inspired Netflix series, Burton got his start in the film industry as an animator for Disney. His films, from the horror comedy Beetlejuice to the historical drama Ed Wood, are all characterized by a unique blend of seriousness and merriment that is uniquely Burton.

Over the course of his career, Burton has regularly worked with Depp, who has starred in numerous of his films, such as Edward Scissorhands, Charlie, and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The last time they were in production together was in 2012 for Dark Shadows, Tim Burton’s big-screen version of the novel.

Although Depp was originally the series’ main attraction in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films, his career has been plagued by scandals in recent years. The actor’s ex-wife, Amber Heard, claimed that Depp was verbally and physically abusive throughout their relationship, leading to a widely publicized defamation trial.

Although the jury found in Depp’s favor at the end of the trial in June, the procedures had already damaged Depp’s career. In 2020, Disney confirmed in a statement that Johnny Depp will not be returning for the planned Pirates of the Caribbean 6, and Warner Bros. requested him to leave the Fantastic Beasts series during the production of the third feature.

Depp’s star has seemingly fallen since the abuse claims surfaced, but his longtime partner Tim Burton is sticking with him. Burton said that he would work with Depp again in a recent interview with Reuters (via ComicBook.com), citing his search for the “perfect person” for each project as the reason. Read on for comment from Burton:

“If the right thing was around, sure… I think with anybody, you just, I never work with anybody even with my friends, it’s not like a party so I always would like to try it with him or anybody to kind of go; what is the part? What is the thing? And then is it the right thing, is it the right character? I take things on those basis and no others.”
