Lucas Film and Studio Ghibli have collaborated on a new hand-drawn animation for Disney+. As shown in the season finale of The Book of Boba Fett, one of the cutest characters in the Star Wars world, Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda, has returned.
Zen: Studio Ghibli’s original short animation, Grogu, and the Dust Bunnies, is a hand-drawn masterpiece. The film is directed by Katsuya Kondo and features both Grogu from The Mandalorian and the anthropomorphized coal dust bunnies who won an Oscar for their work in the animated picture Spirited Away. Disney’s collaboration with seven Japanese animation companies to create short films that combine their own takes on the Star Wars universe came as no surprise to fans following the success of the Star Wars: Vision television series.
The unveiling of the film shocked a lot of people. Studio Ghibli posted a video showing the Lucasfilm and Ghibli logos, then followed it up with a photo of a Grogu figure. This aroused a lot of speculation regarding the show’s potential subject matter. Disney’s following tweet just confirmed the show’s title, leaving fans wanting more.
One of Disney’s crowning efforts, The Mandalorian, premiered in 2019 to widespread acclaim. The majority of Star Wars fans have said that the debut of Baby Yoda is what made them fall in love with the franchise all over again. The film also became a favorite among viewers who had never before exhibited any enthusiasm for the series. Everything hinged on the father-son dynamic between Grogu and Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal).
Din and Grogu’s separation at the conclusion of season 2 of The Mandalorian left viewers hanging while Grogu began his Jedi training. After seeing the two characters reunite in The Book of Boba Fett, fans were left wondering what would come of them. Disney treated fans to a fresh new animated short video starring Grogu to mark the occasion.
The launch of Season 3 of The Mandalorian is set for February of 2023. The D23 Expo video from September dropped hints that Din was no longer a Mandalorian and called the two of them a “Clan of two.” Little is known about Season 3 of The Mandalorian, however there has been some speculation that it may follow Pedro Pascal’s character as he seeks forgiveness.
