Srilankan cricketer Gunathialka has been taken into custody by the Australian police over the alleged charges of sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney.

According to the Police, he was arrested at the hotel where the Srilankan team was staying on Saturday night. The New South Wale Police Commander Jayne Doherty said the cricketer has been charged with four counts of “sexual intercourse without consent” with a woman whom he met online in the city.

Gunathialka has assaulted the 29-year-old woman several times while performing sex acts upon her,” Police Commander said. 

The New South Wales Police issued a statement quoted by ESPNCricinfo, “The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it’s alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday 2 November 2022.”

The statement issued by the Srilankan Cricket Team stated: “Sri Lanka Cricket confirms that it was notified by the ICC that player Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested on the allegations of sexual assault of a woman in Sydney, and Mr. Gunathilaka is due to appear in court tomorrow (7 November 2022).”

The South-Asian Cricket team announced that an internal inquiry will be conducted against the cricketer and he would be penalized if the court holds him guilty of the act. 

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to emphasize that it adopts a zero-tolerance policy for any such [alleged] conduct by a player and will provide all the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry into the incident,” the statement added. 

Gunathilaka appeared in only one game in Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign, in a match against Namibia which the Lankan tigers lost by 55 runs. Gunathilaka was ruled out of the tournament as he suffered a hamstring injury but he still remained with the team.

The cricketer applied for bail in the local court on Monday, but his bail was refused by a Magistrate in Sydney because of the serious charges against him. 

The World Cup dream of the Srilankan team is over as they are eliminated from the T20 tournament on Saturday night after losing to England in their final match.
