On Wednesday, the makers of Rust announced that the independent Western, in which Alec Baldwin kills cinematographer Halyna Hutchins with a fake gun, will now be made at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana.

It is still hoped that production will continue in the spring.

Rust Movie Productions said last week that many original team members, including director Joel Souza, who was shot and injured in the October 2021 event at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico that murdered Hutchins, are returning to finish the film. Bianca Cline, the Marcel in the Shell with Shoes On cinematographer, has joined the team as DP.

The Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office has charged Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the unfortunate occurrence. The first hearing in the case is scheduled for Friday.

Yellowstone Film Ranch co-founders Richard Gray, Carter Boehm, and Colin Davis said today, “The whole Rust production team’s dedication and desire to honor Halyna’s vision has had a huge effect on us.” “We’ve learned so much about Halyna as a friend and colleague, the depth of her craft, and the lasting impact she had on so many. We are pleased to be a part of realizing her goal and carrying on her inspirational legacy by sponsoring this film.

“I am sincerely thankful to Richie, Carter, and Colin for the invitation to the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana,” Souza said. Their persistent friendship, support, and now collaboration in finishing Rust and commemorating Halyna mean everything to me and our whole production crew. The beauty of Montana is beyond description, and the warmth and friendliness shown by everyone I’ve encountered have been both humbling and inspirational. It’s an honor to work with such wonderful people as we see this through on Halyna’s behalf.

Yellowstone Film Ranch is situated in Livingston, Montana, and has hosted film projects such as Nicolas Cage’s The Old Way since it opened in 2020; curiously, that picture earned Gutierrez-First Reed’s credit as an armorer.

Rust is an independent Western where Alec Baldwin shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins with a fake gun in October 2021. They hope to start shooting again in the spring.

Rust Movie Productions confirmed the news on Tuesday. They also said that Bianca Cline, whose recent work includes Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, has joined the film’s production as a cinematographer, joining a mix of new and old crew members.

Cline’s money will be donated to charity in honor of Hutchins, according to the producers.

Stunt coordinator Allan Graf, costume designer Terese Davis, makeup department head Stacy Lockhart, and hair department head Anna Williams are among the original crew members returning with director Joel Souza, who was shot and wounded in the incident in which Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

This is the second time the producers have made a huge deal out of claiming a revived Rust was taking place.

They said in October last year that production would commence with the original cast in January 2023, a date that definitely passed. Based on today’s announcement, it’s unknown when or where filming will restart or who will return to the cast.

Baldwin and Reed were officially accused by the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office on January 31 and face up to five years in prison if convicted. Baldwin has always denied pulling the trigger on the 1880s prop gun that killed Hutchins and injured Souza on the set of Bonanza Creek Ranch. The D.A. has said that Souza and many of the people who worked on the first Rust production could be witnesses in the criminal case against Baldwin and Reed, which could go to trial later this year.

The first hearing in the case is scheduled for February 24.
