by Hailey Greg

The famous psychological horror film titled “Orphan” has finally received a sequel that is equally chaotic and entertaining as the original film. Orphan: First Kill shows. As per the initial reviews, Orphan: First Kill has been able to garner the attention of the audience and proved to be engaging and thrilling. Stellar performances by Fuhrman and Stiles have received rave reviews from the viewers and the critics.

Isabelle Fuhrman will be reprising the role of Leena in Orphan: First Kill as the murderous woman who disguised as a 9-year-old to con and murder with the help of her body double Kennedy Irwin. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the first film established that Leena was a 33-year-old woman suffering from a rare hormonal disorder which she used to con wealthy families into adopting her. The film features how she terrorized the Coleman family and also, attempted to seduce her adoptive father. Only after he rejects her, he realizes what his wife has been telling him for days that Esther, their adoptive daughter is not a child but it’s too late and she kills him.

Orphan: First Kill will follow the origin story and the audience wonders what is left that they need to find out about Leena in the sequel. Apparently, Leena who is at the Estonian asylum will escape only to go back into her old life. Leena misses her murderess era and she is not going to stop anytime soon. This time she will reach out to the US authorities as the missing daughter of a rich family, Esther Albright. She will be wholeheartedly welcomed by her mother Tricia Albright (Julia Stiles), father Allen Albright (Rossif Sutherland), and older brother Gunnar Albright (Matthew Finlan). However, when she believes that she has finally fooled the family, the tables will turn unexpectedly.

Oprhan: First Kill doesn’t depict Leena’s first kill and focuses on an incident that happened two years before the Coleman family adopted her. That experience scarred her and turned her into a murderer for life. Alex Mace, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has penned down the story while David Coggeshall, has written the screenplay. However, the audience failed to understand the background narrative and did not see that coming.

Some fans also highlighted the subtle humor behind Isabelle, an adult woman pretending to be a young child for real…the irony!

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the lighthearted comedy which was not intended. Also, they have put a lot of effort into masking Isabelle’s real height with effects and a body double. While the first film was a real psychological horror, the second appears to be more of a comedic horror since the audience is already aware of Leena’s little secret.

Nevertheless, Orphan: First Kill is a complete entertainment package. The film premiered on Paramount+ Friday, August 19, and is 99 minutes long. It is rated R for bloody violence, language, and brief sexual content.
