New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Films is in the Works

Warner Bros., the Hollywood company behind Peter Jackson’s popular, Oscar-winning series, announced Thursday that several new Lord of the Rings movies are in the works.

David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Brothers Discovery’s parent company, said at an earnings conference that new studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy had agreed to make more movies based on JRR Tolkien’s big fantasy books.

He declared, “Today, I’m delighted to reveal that Mike and Pam inked a contract to produce several Lord of the Rings pictures. “We’re thrilled because The Lord of the Rings is one of history’s most recognizable storylines. Keep checking back for updates on this front.”

Jackson told AFP in a statement that he and his associates had been kept “in the know every step of the process” despite Zaslav’s lack of further information. Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens added, “We look forward to engaging with them more and hearing their vision for the brand going forward.”

No information was given on which plots or time periods from Tolkien’s massive works will serve as the basis for the new movies. They will be made by Warner subsidiary New Line Cinema, which also made Jackson’s first trilogy.

The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a television adaption produced by rival studio Amazon, was released in September. The cost of making this prequel to the Lord of the Rings books is estimated to be $1 billion for all five seasons. With 25 million viewers on the first day, the first season’s debut was the most watched on the Amazon Video streaming service, however, the reviews were mixed.

The first three Lord of the Rings films from Jackson made nearly $3 billion at the box office and were nominated for 17 Oscars, including best picture for The Return of the King from the 2003 trilogy. Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, and Cate Blanchett acted in them. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, a following trilogy based on Tolkien’s The Hobbit was also a huge box office success.
