Martin Scorsese Comments on Hollywood's Fixation

Martin Scorsese has criticized those who assess movies based on their box office performance, claiming that this fixation with numbers leads to cinema being “devalued, demeaned, and belittled from all sides.”

This may or may not be the opinion of the financial minds at a number of Hollywood’s major studios. On Wednesday, at the New York Film Festival, while promoting his documentary New York Dolls: Personality Crisis: One Night Only, Scorsese gave an impassioned speech condemning the Hollywood establishment.

Martin Scorsese has never been shy about expressing his hatred for certain genres of film, namely those that he claims to stifle the box office and prevent excellent films from being seen. The legendary filmmaker has recently spoken out against the status of the film business, and in doing so, he has once again attacked the idea that a picture that does well at the box office must be excellent. His words:

“Since the ’80s, there’s been a focus on numbers. It’s kind of repulsive. The cost of a movie is one thing. Understand that a film costs a certain amount, and they expect to at least get the amount back, plus, again. The emphasis is now on numbers, cost, the opening weekend, how much it made in the U.S.A., how much it made in England, how much it made in Asia, how much it made in the entire world, how many viewers it got.”

Scorsese went on to say that the festival is great because it’s one of the few venues where a movie may be shown only to be watched, without worrying about getting any kind of recognition or accolades.

He elaborated, “As a filmmaker, and as a person who can’t imagine life without cinema, I always find it really insulting. I’ve always known that such considerations have no place at the New York Film Festival, and here’s the key also with this: There are no awards here. You don’t have to compete. You just have to love cinema here.”
