As the two shows are currently making headlines everywhere, new viewership data indicates that The House of the Dragon‘s premiere has beaten The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premiere by a wide margin.
Prequel to George R.R. Martin’s super hit series Game of Thrones, HOTD enjoys a massive fan base spread across the world. On the other hand, The Rings of Power is also a prequel series to J. R.R. Tolkein ever-famous series of movies The Lord of the Rings.
Both fantasy shows have kept the fans anticipating prior to their release and now when they have finally premiered their much-awaited first episodes, the response is simply overwhelming.
House of the Dragon is set in Westeros about 200 years earlier than the events of Game of Thrones Season 1. On the other hand, The Rings of Power takes the audience back in time to the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.
HOTD and The Rings of Power have been receiving rave reviews from critics and the audience. However, House of the Dragon has taken the lead with a tremendous number and the reviews so far indicate that the fans are really enjoying the prequel series.HBO Max has once again attracted a large audience with the well-built start for the Game of Thrones prequel. The diehard followers of Game of Thrones have maintained the legacy and have put their differences aside in regard to the GoT season 8. The show has set a new record and is getting immensely popular left, right and centre.
While on the other hand, Rings of Power has had problems with appraisal bombing. Since both fantasy shows enjoy a ready-made fanbase that has been following the franchise for many decades, popularity was expected. However, the fact that HOTD is leading with a larger number of views is applaudable.
Luiz Fernando of Samba TV Data shared data on Twitter highlighting that House of the Dragon‘s first episode was seen by 4.8 million total among the United States family circle which beats the Rings of Power premiere by a wide margin as it was only viewed by 1.8 million.
House of the Dragon follows the story of an inner succession war within House Targaryen during the peak of their reign. The show is set 172 years before the arrival of Daenerys Targaryen.
Fans had been flooding social media with theories and predictions ahead of the premiere. A large number of viewers in the US also reported difficulty watching the series online when it premiered there on HBO Max at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

Meanwhile Amazon shared that Rings of Power was viewed by 25 million viewers across the globe in its first 24 hours of the premiere. Both shows have set new records for their respective streaming platforms.
Samba TV’s numbers of views vary a bit since they use different techniques for counting viewership. Being the third-party examiner, they possibly have more than one objective. According to these numbers, House of the Dragon was declared to be the more popular show compared to The Rings of Powers.
