House of the Dragon on HBO: Biggest Debut With 10 Million Views!

by Hailey Greg

The wait is finally over! House of the Dragon kicked off on HBO Max last Sunday with a power-packed first episode to officially mark the beginning of the Game of Thrones prequel series. The fantasy drama series has been making headlines for the last two years as it was expected to fill the void left behind after the infamous final season of Game of Thrones.

And it managed to exceed the expectations. House of the Dragon has broken all the previous records on IMDb with over 10 million views and a rating of 9/10 on the first day of its premiere and just like winters, we knew it was coming!

The prequel series has introduced us to so many new exciting characters. The series is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones Season 1 and depicts the whole story of House Targaryens. The cast includes Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Milly Alcock, Graham McTavish, and Rhys Ifans.

Based on the novels by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is considered to be the most hit television series of all time. Before the show came to an end, HBO started planning different prequel series to keep the franchise going. As some of the diehard fans of GoT did not approve of the final season due to a contradictory ending, they did not seem ready to watch the prequel series with the same zeal.

However, the narrative changed rather quickly after HBO released the first trailer of House of the Dragon, it went viral on social media. This is also the reason why the first episode of HOTD broke all the viewership records with 10 million views in just one day as the loyal fans of Game of Thrones made sure to watch it right away. It is also to be noted that Game of Thrones could only manage to get 2.2. Million views when it made its debut in 2011 before it became a global hit with 8 seasons across a decade.

While it was expected, HBO’s Chief of Content Officer is overwhelmed by the response from the viewers on the first episode of House of the Dragon.

“It was wonderful to see millions of “Game of Thrones” fans return with us to Westeros last night. ‘House of the Dragon’ features an incredibly talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into the production, and we’re ecstatic with viewers’ positive response. We look forward to sharing with audiences what else George, Ryan, and Miguel have in store for them this season.”

HBO has confirmed that HOTD has 10 episodes meanwhile, the second season of the prequel series has also got the green signal. The show is already receiving tremendous views and rave reviews from the audience and expecting that this time they won’t get disappointed with how the show concludes.

There is no denying the fact that Game of Thrones has the biggest fandom across the world and its popularity is unmatchable. However,  critics see HOTD in a similar league if the showrunners can maintain the quality throughout the entire series.
