As It Was leads the IFPI global singles chart

British singer-songwriter Harry Styles added the IFPI World Single Award for 2022 to his Grammy and BRIT Awards wins on Thursday, the recorded music industry’s official organization announced.

The award is granted to the musician who has the year’s best-selling song on all digital platforms.

Styles’ third studio album “Harry’s Home,” which was released in April, included the synth-pop single, which topped charts worldwide.

Styles, who came to popularity as a member of the boy band One Direction, won song of the year at the BRIT Awards earlier this month for the ballad. Both there and at the Grammys, “Harry’s Home” was named album of the year.

“Harry initially got an IFPI Award as part of One Direction 10 years ago when we first established the IFPI World Music Artist Chart,” IFPI Chief Executive Frances Moore said in a statement.

“It’s an honour this year to give him with an award for his fantastic hit ‘As It Was,’ which has soundtracked the year for so many music lovers all across the globe.”

Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” landed in second on the IFPI list, followed by Justin Bieber and The Kid Laroi’s duet “Stay” at number three.

The Top 20 also includes four songs sung primarily in Spanish for the first time, with Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny appearing twice, once for his duet with Chencho Corleone “Me Porto Bonito” at no. 9 and once for his solo smash “Tit Me Preguntó” at no. 11.

Another noteworthy performance is Kate Bush’s 1985 song “Running Up That Hill (A Contract With God)”, which saw a comeback last year courtesy to the smash Netflix show “Stranger Things”. It ranked 16th on the IFPI list. HBO Max is usually rated as one of the top streaming services.
