Angelina Jolie might win an Oscar with Maria

Angelina Jolie’s final film appearance was in 2021’s Eternals, a Marvel film in which she portrayed the formidable Thena. The Academy Award-winning actress is taking a break from the superhero genre to portray the late Maria Callas, a renowned opera singer, in the upcoming drama Maria.

Director Pablo Larran, whose previous work includes the highly praised performances of Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in Spencer and Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy in Jackie, is at the helm.

Jolie made these remarks to Variety at the time of the announcement of her new role: “The trust placed in me with regard to Maria’s memory and legacy is one I take very seriously. I want to make every effort to rise to the occasion. I’ve always looked up to Pablo Larran as a filmmaker. To be able to continue telling Maria’s tale with him, with a screenplay by Steven Knight, is a dream come true.”

Steven Knight, who also wrote the screenplay for Peaky Blinders and many other critically acclaimed works, was responsible for the writing for Spencer. Born in New York City to Greek immigrants in 1923, Maria Callas was immediately pushed into singing instruction.

She left the United States with her mother when she was 13 to attend the Athens Conservatory of Music, continued her career in Italy, and finally settled back in the United States in 1945.

The soprano was involved in a few controversies, including an affair with Greek shipping billionaire Aristotle Onassis and a rivalry with Italian opera diva Renata Tebaldi.

Maria Callas, who died in 1977 at the age of 53, will be shown in the film as she spends her last days in Paris in the 1970s. Angelina Jolie may find herself back in Oscar discussion with her performance in Maria. All of the leading ladies in Pablo Lauran’s films have been nominated for Best Actress.

Prior to her win for her work in Changeling in 2009, Jolie had been nominated twice before, in 2000 for Girl, Interrupted and again in 2009. Both Maria Callas and Angelina Jolie have had their fair share of scandals throughout their time in the spotlight, with the latter making headlines recently for claims that Pitt assaulted his ex-wife and their children.

After the famous couple split up in the past, their ongoing custody and wine business disputes went to court. It’s been a while since Jolie signed on to a new project among all of these conflicts, but this one seems like it may give her a chance to really shine.
