Roseanne Liang’s Shadow in the Cloud is the sort of war film that tries a number of weird decisions merely to see if they work. Still, it’s fascinating to see a bold director attempt to keep midnight-ready movies surprising, even if it means an earnest but ludicrous mash-up of World War II dogfights, gremlin pandemonium, and feminist activism in action such as this.

From there, writer-director Oliver Hermanus (‘Beauty,’ ‘Shirley Adams’) creates an evocative and intensely stressful war drama with little real fighting, but plenty of menace and strife.
6. Legion of Brothers (2017)
In Legion of Brothers, 15 years after their terrible missions, surviving troops show the dangers faced by two of the first U.S. Army Special Forces units sent to Afghanistan following 9/11, as well as the long-term human consequences of such events on those who fought. Those who felt that their sacrifices had a swift and decisive impact now bear the scars of these recollections. Inferred from the video is the soldiers’ dismay that a succession of following poor US tactical mistakes would create “quagmires” in the area many years later.
